Camping Trip

We spent some time hippo watching by the river. We saw a group of 5 hippos bobbing up and down. Mr. Bliss gave us some great information about hippos. Did you know that more people are killed by hippos than any other African animal? They are very territorial so if a canoe gets too close to their area they attack! Did you know that hippos can run 35km/hr on land? Have you ever heard a hippo's sound? It is loud! Have you ever seen a hippo yawn? We did but learned that itwasn't stretching, the hippo was letting us know who owned that stretch of the river.
The two shapes in the distance that look rocks are hippos. The big rock is the mother and the smaller one is her baby. Around one o'clock in the morning, a group of us decided to walk down to the river. As we approached the bank, a hippo came up out of the water. We went running quickly back to camp after what we had learned about hippos that evening.

Ray attempted to stay up all night but couldn't quite keep his eyes open at 5:00 in the morning.
The girls took an early morning stroll to the river to watch the hippos.

After a brief breakfast, some of the students braved the hippo infested waters to canoe in the Niger River.
The students had an amazing amount of energy after so little sleep. They managed to cream the teachers (Hannah Rowse posing with me).
We got them back. Ray after being creamed by the teachers.

We returned from the trip Friday around 11:00 am. The students were so tired they couldn't even stay awake to watch a movie.
